UN Day in Tajikistan celebrated with a Youth Panel Event, to discuss climate change and glaciers preservation
24 October 2024
A Youth Panel dedicated to the UN Day with participation of youth activists, young climate experts from academia, civil society organizations (CSOs) and UN personnel, was organized in Dushanbe to mark the UN Day.
The event focused on discussions about the role of youth in tackling climate change at global and national levels and featured the international agenda on promotion of glaciers preservation, spearhead by Tajikistan at global level. Participants also worked together in groups and proposed ideas on how young people can bring positive changes through community work, advocacy, science and innovations, and youth participation.
With almost 70% of the population in Tajikistan under 30 years, it is important to hear the voices of youth and position them at the center of climate-related discussions and practices, in order to build a sustainable future.
Mr Victor Olsavszky, UN Resident Coordinator a. i. mentioned in his opening statement: “Climate change is a major concern for the world, but especially for Tajikistan which is a home to 93% of mountains, including snowy peaks and some of the biggest and most beautiful glaciers in the world – the water towers. Youth engagement is crucial in addressing climate change, from grassroots activism to global advocacy. By raising awareness, participating in community initiatives, engaging in research, and leveraging social media platforms, you can inspire others and mobilize efforts toward sustainable solutions”.
UN Day dedicated events in Tajikistan, organized jointly by UN system agencies, will also include UN dialogue with CSOs and private sector, as well as Children’s art event. The events aim to feature environmental protection and climate change, considering the three Conference of Parties (COPs) - COP29 in Azerbaijan, COP16 on Biological Diversity in Colombia, COP16 on UN Convention on Combating Desertification in Saudi Arabia, as well as the International Conference on Glaciers Preservation to be held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan in 2025.
The United Nations plays a vital role in addressing global challenges, promoting peace, and fostering sustainable development. The events organized at the occasion of UN Day, serve as a reminder of our shared commitment towards just world on a safe planet.
