I’m happy to share my first message as UN Resident Coordinator in Tajikistan on the International Women’s Day (IWD).
Our shared vision to end poverty, rescue the planet and build a peaceful world can only be achieved by ensuring gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. #IWD2020 is the perfect time to reaffirm our commitment to the provision of equal rights and opportunities for women and girls.
Marking this year’s International Women’s Day, UN Secretary General, António Guterres noted that the 21st century must be the century of women’s equality and that everyone has an important role in making that happen.
The theme of the 2020 International Women’s Day, “I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights,” reminds us that we need to unite our forces and take serious action to remove obstacles at all levels to ensure women and girls are educated, valued in their families and societies, work and earn equally, have more choices and are free of any form of violence at home or in public spaces.
2020 is also a year of several signature initiatives, including the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action – the most progressive roadmap for the empowerment of women and girls everywhere – and the UN75 Global Conversation Campaign – a large and inclusive global conversation on the role of global cooperation in building the future we want.
I invite all of you to use the IWD and other such events to promote the participation of women and girls in designing our common future and to commit to providing equal opportunity for every woman and girl to fulfill their potential.
Happy Women’s Day!
